OpenAI smartphone will go into production in the first half of 2027

TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that OpenAI is accelerating development of its first AI-focused smartphone, now targeting mass production in the first half of 2027 – earlier than previously expected.

The device may use a custom chip from MediaTek, likely based on the upcoming Dimensity 9600 and built on TSMC’s advanced N2P process. The chip is expected to prioritize AI performance, featuring a dual-NPU setup and an enhanced image signal processor for better visual understanding.

Other rumored specs include LPDDR6 RAM, UFS 5.0 storage and advanced security features. Kuo estimates shipments could reach 30 million units across 2027–2028, though OpenAI has not officially confirmed any plans for a smartphone.
