iPhones will autolock in the future, if stolen from the user’s hands

Apple is reportedly developing a new anti-theft feature for iPhones that automatically locks the device if it detects it has been snatched from a user’s hands. Similar to Android’s Theft Detection Lock feature introduced with Android 15, the system would use accelerometer and motion data to recognize suspicious movements linked to theft.

The feature could also use proximity data from a paired Apple Watch and location awareness from Stolen Device Protection to determine whether the iPhone is in a familiar place. If a theft is detected in an unfamiliar location, the iPhone would instantly lock and restrict access to sensitive settings.

The feature is still in development, but reports suggest Apple could launch it in the near future.
