A US jury has ordered Apple to pay $5.7 billion to Taction Technology for infringing two patents related to haptic feedback technology used in Apple’s Taptic Engine.
Taction filed the lawsuit in 2021, arguing that Apple’s technology infringed patents covering vibration modules designed to apply vibrations to the wearer’s skin. The Taptic Engine debuted in the Apple Watch in 2014 and arrived on the iPhone the following year.
Apple strongly disputes the verdict, saying its Taptic Engine is fundamentally different from Taction’s technology and that it does not use the patented technology. The company said it plans to appeal the decision.
