Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Höttges has questioned SpaceX’s ambition to become the fourth major US wireless carrier, arguing that satellite connectivity cannot replace traditional mobile networks in densely populated areas.
Höttges said SpaceX faces significant infrastructure challenges despite its planned acquisition of 800MHz spectrum, as it will need to build or acquire ground-based stations to support its network. He also warned mobile operators against partnering with SpaceX through mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) agreements, saying such deals could threaten their own businesses.
T-Mobile already partners with SpaceX to provide satellite connectivity, with plans to expand the service to Europe in 2028. However, SpaceX will need substantial investment before it can realistically compete with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.
