Apple has been negotiating with OpenAI since mid-2023 to integrate GPT technology into iOS 18, potentially unveiling the partnership at WWDC 2024. Apple aims to enhance Siri’s capabilities, making it more responsive and able to handle complex queries, possibly turning it into a chatbot. Apple employees have already tested connecting ChatGPT to Siri with impressive results.
Microsoft, which also relies on OpenAI for its Copilot features, is concerned about the partnership, particularly regarding server demand and competition in AI capabilities. Microsoft invested $13 billion in OpenAI and seeks a share of future profits. Apple explored a similar deal with Google but is also developing its own offline language model for simpler tasks. The first preview of iOS 18’s AI features is expected on June 10 at WWDC 2024.
