EU wants to scan your encrypted messages

The European Union is considering new legislation that would mandate the bulk scanning of digital messages, including encrypted ones, to detect child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The proposed law includes an “upload moderation” system to scan all digital messages and requires services to get user permission for scanning, without which sharing images or URLs would be prohibited. While the law supports end-to-end encryption for privacy, it also suggests scanning messages before encryption, leading to concerns from privacy advocates and companies like Signal. The proposal faces significant opposition, with privacy groups and European Parliament members warning it could lead to mass surveillance and vulnerabilities. If the legislation gains enough support, negotiations will start to finalize the law, though it may still face challenges ahead.
