New York bans addictive feeds for teens

New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed two new laws to protect kids and teens from social media harms. The Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) for Kids Act requires parental consent for using addictive recommendation algorithms for minors. The New York Child Data Protection Act limits data collection and sale of minors’ information without consent. These laws add to a growing number of state-level regulations addressing online safety for children. Federal proposals like the Kids Online Safety Act are still pending votes. Industry groups have criticized these state laws, claiming they may face legal challenges over constitutionality and effectiveness.
