OpenAI has launched Sora, its text-to-video AI model, as part of its “ship-mas” release series. Available to ChatGPT subscribers in the US and many countries, Sora and its upgraded version, Sora Turbo, offer features like generating videos from text, animating images and remixing videos.
ChatGPT Plus subscribers can create up to 50 videos (720p, 5 seconds), while Pro subscribers ($200/month) get unlimited generations, higher resolutions (1080p) and longer durations (20 seconds). Videos include watermarks and metadata to indicate AI generation, with strict content guidelines in place.
Features include a storyboard tool for sequence-based video creation, image-to-video conversion and a remix tool. Users without subscriptions can explore a feed of community-generated videos. While launched widely, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted a delay for Europe and the UK.
The launch follows controversy over claims by artists about unpaid alpha testing. OpenAI acknowledges challenges in balancing moderation with creative freedom.
