Google Maps is renaming iconic locations following directives from the Trump-led US government. The “Gulf of Mexico” will now appear as the “Gulf of America” for US users, while global users will see both names. Similarly, Alaska’s “Denali” will be renamed “Mount McKinley.”
These changes are part of a US initiative to “restore names that honor American greatness.” Google stated it follows official government sources for updates and will implement these names when reflected in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).
The decision has sparked controversy, with critics highlighting past disputes over name changes, such as the omission of “Persian Gulf” in 2012 and Mexico’s lighthearted suggestion to rename the US as “Mexican America.”
