Google is launching an AI-powered feature, “Ask for Me,” through Search Labs to automate phone inquiries for local businesses. It calls businesses on users’ behalf to check prices and availability for services like oil changes and nail salons. Available in the US for English queries, it uses Google’s Duplex technology, previously used for restaurant reservations. Businesses can opt out and AI calls are disclosed. While promising convenience, challenges like poor audio or strong accents remain. Users can test it by opting in via Search Labs.
