OpenAI is reportedly expanding beyond data-center chips into smartphones, working with MediaTek and Qualcomm to develop AI-focused processors for a future “AI phone,” with mass production targeted for 2028, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
The chips are expected to prioritize power efficiency, memory management and on-device AI tasks, while more demanding workloads will rely on cloud processing. Final specifications and partners could be confirmed by late 2026 or early 2027.
The design may emphasize always-on AI capabilities and strong dedicated AI hardware – similar to the approach seen in Google Pixel devices – while still maintaining balanced CPU and GPU performance. Manufacturing is rumored to involve Luxshare, suggesting OpenAI is steadily laying the groundwork for its own smartphone ecosystem.
