Video: how to steal $10,000 from locked iPhone in controlled setting

A video by Veritasium reveals a niche iPhone vulnerability that could allow up to $10,000 to be stolen via NFC payments – but only under very specific conditions.

The exploit, discovered by researchers Ioana Boureanu and Tom Chothia, tricks a locked iPhone into thinking it’s interacting with a transit terminal using Apple’s Express Transit feature. It only works if a Visa card is set as the transit card and doesn’t affect Mastercard or others.

Apple says the issue relates to Visa’s system, while Visa notes users are protected by its zero-liability policy and calls the exploit highly unlikely in real-world scenarios.
