A longtime Verizon customer says a routine phone replacement turned into a nightmare after receiving a refurbished device that was mistakenly enrolled in a corporate Mobile Device Management (MDM) system. The phone eventually factory-reset itself, wiping all personal data, including irreplaceable photos and contacts and then locked the user out while requesting approval from an IT administrator.
Verizon later determined the device was likely a demo unit that had not been properly wiped before being sent out. Despite acknowledging the mistake and offering limited compensation, Verizon has not recovered the user’s original phone or lost data, prompting the customer to consider legal action under California privacy laws.
