A new report from Common Sense Media has rated Google Search’s AI Overviews and AI Mode as an “Unacceptable Risk” for children. Researchers tested more than 2,600 searches using child accounts with SafeSearch enabled and found issues including inaccurate information, homework completion, deepfake instructions and poor handling of mental health crisis queries.
The report argues that parents have limited control over AI-generated search results, which are widely used by young people. Google disputes the findings, saying many of the tested prompts were unrealistic and do not reflect typical Search usage. The report is expected to increase pressure on Google to strengthen AI safety measures for children.
