Global AR display shipments are forecast to reach 21 million units by 2030, surpassing VR display shipments at 19 million, according to Omdia. The shift reflects growing demand for lighter and more comfortable AI-powered smartglasses.
Manufacturers face a difficult balance between performance, weight and battery life. Some products, such as Ray-Ban Meta, avoid displays altogether to focus on AI, audio and cameras.
Omdia expects AR displays to increase their market share from 28% in 2026 to 57% by 2032, while VR displays fall from 72% to 43%. As AI becomes more important, manufacturers are increasingly reconsidering the role of displays to reduce power consumption and device weight.
