Rising RAM costs push phone makers toward hidden compromises

The ongoing rise in RAM prices is forcing smartphone manufacturers to find new ways to control costs without significantly increasing prices. Xiaomi may be one of the latest companies to make an under-the-radar compromise with its Xiaomi 17T.

Audio testing reportedly found that the Xiaomi 17T has weaker speakers than both the Xiaomi 15T and the smaller Xiaomi 17, with less bass, depth and clarity. Xiaomi has not yet confirmed whether this is an intentional downgrade.

The situation highlights a broader trend as manufacturers look for less noticeable areas to cut costs. Google has raised Pixel 11 prices by $100, while Apple has reportedly reduced some Mac storage and RAM configurations.

For consumers, this means comparing specifications alone may no longer be enough. Important compromises could be hidden in areas such as speakers and other hardware that manufacturers rarely detail.
