A new survey by Elon University and The Washington Post found that 27% of Americans use AI chatbots for personal, emotional or social questions, including relationship advice, romantic conversations and companionship when they feel alone.
Among those users, nearly 40% said they sometimes use AI to feel less lonely, while almost a third consider their most-used chatbot a friend. Researchers warn that relying on AI for emotional connection could potentially contribute to greater social isolation.
The findings also highlight Apple’s decision to design its upcoming AI-powered Siri differently. Apple executives Craig Federighi and Greg Joswiak have said Siri will not encourage romantic or emotionally dependent relationships, instead focusing on helping users get things done and learn about the world.
