Google’s Pixel 11 introduces an accessibility feature that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) into written English in real time. A new hands-on demo shows the feature working outside Google’s original presentation, with translated phrases appearing continuously in Gboard.
The feature uses the phone’s front camera and Google’s SL2T AI model, which analyzes hand, arm, torso, head and facial movements to understand sign language. This allows Deaf users to communicate naturally through ASL while the phone converts their signs into text that others can read.
Google is also expected to expand the sign-to-text feature to additional Pixel models in the future.
