Global smartphone shipments fell 20% year over year in Q3 2026, reaching their lowest level for a third quarter in 14 years, according to Counterpoint Research. Ongoing memory supply constraints and rising component costs have pushed smartphone prices higher, squeezing demand for affordable devices.
Samsung led the market with a 23% share, up from 19% a year earlier, while Apple followed closely with 22%, compared with 18%. Xiaomi, Oppo and vivo all lost market share.
Samsung benefited from strong early demand for its new foldable phones, while Apple achieved its highest-ever Q3 market share. Global smartphone retail prices have risen 20% this year and manufacturers are expected to prioritize profitability, reduce production and focus more on premium devices.
