Switzerland releases its own AI model trained on public data

Switzerland has launched Apertus, an open-source AI model positioned as an alternative to ChatGPT and Claude. Available on HuggingFace, it includes source code, training data, model weights and full development details. Trained on 1,800+ languages, Apertus comes in 8B and 70B parameter versions, comparable to Meta’s Llama 3. Built to follow EU copyright rules and AI codes of practice, it only uses public data and respects site opt-out requests, aiming to set a new standard for transparent and trustworthy AI.
