Google made new secret defence deal with Pentagon

The United States Department of Defense has reportedly signed a deal to use Google Gemini for classified projects, granting broad access for “any lawful government purpose,” with Google having limited control over how the AI is applied.

The move follows the Pentagon’s exclusion of Anthropic, whose restrictions on military use of its Claude AI conflicted with defense needs. The DOD is now relying heavily on Google, OpenAI and xAI for advanced AI capabilities.

While officials say Gemini is already saving significant time for military operations, the deal has sparked internal backlash at Google, with hundreds of employees warning about potential misuse. The situation echoes the 2018 Project Maven controversy, highlighting ongoing tensions between AI development and military use.
