Android XR smart glasses with display won’t debut until next year

Google revealed more details about its Android XR smart glasses plans during I/O 2026, confirming that audio-only “Intelligent Eyewear” models from Google, Samsung and partners are expected later this year. However, more advanced display glasses with in-lens visual overlays likely won’t arrive until 2027 at the earliest.

Google has already started giving prototype hardware to selected developers and plans to expand access through its Android XR Developer Catalyst Program. One confirmed device is XREAL’s Project Aura, though it still relies on a separate tethered puck for processing and battery power.

Meanwhile, Samsung is still expected to unveil smart glasses at its next Galaxy Unpacked event, but current signs point to them being audio-focused rather than full AR display glasses.
