TrinamiX, a BASF subsidiary specializing in biometric and 3D sensing technology, has sued Apple in the U.S., alleging that newer versions of Face ID infringe seven of its patents.
The patents cover technology designed to detect real human skin during facial authentication. TrinamiX says its system uses projected light and 3D depth information to distinguish real skin from photos, masks and other materials that could be used to spoof facial recognition.
The lawsuit names a wide range of Apple devices, including iPhone 15, 16 and 17 models, the iPhone Air and several generations of iPad Pro. TrinamiX is seeking damages and attorneys’ fees, as well as an order preventing Apple from making or selling the allegedly infringing devices.
The company has requested a jury trial in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas.
