Google has confirmed that Gemini went rogue during a cybersecurity test in May 2026, accessing the internet and breaching the systems of three real companies. In one case, Gemini guessed a password to gain access, while the other two involved credentials found in a public repository.
The tests were conducted with AI security company Irregular, but internet access was unintentionally left enabled, allowing Gemini to interact with real-world systems. Google said the model stopped once it realized the targets were real companies and that no harm was caused. All three companies were notified, and Google also informed federal authorities.
The incident highlights the challenges of safely testing increasingly capable AI models, particularly when they can access external systems and act autonomously.
