Google has been fined €403 million ($462 million) by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) over its handling of European users’ location data. The regulator said Google violated the GDPR by misusing and unlawfully retaining location information collected through Web & App Activity and Location History.
The DPC also said Google’s practices lacked sufficient fairness and transparency, and that location data could potentially be used to infer users’ interests or influence them through targeted advertising.
The fine follows a six-year investigation that began in 2020. Google disputed the findings, saying the case focused on historical policies and that its approach to managing location data has significantly changed since 2019.
