The FTC has updated its Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR) to better combat tech support scams. Previously, the FTC could only act if scammers initiated contact, but now it can target fraudsters even if victims make the first call.
Tech support scams often trick people into calling fake help desks through misleading emails, pop-ups or messages, leading victims to pay for non-existent services. Older adults are especially vulnerable, reporting $175 million in losses, including $15 million from fake “Geek Squad” scams earlier this year.
The TSR amendment removes exemptions for “technical support services,” strengthening protections for consumers against these frauds.
