A new bill proposed by Senator Josh Hawley aims to ban the use of China-made AI technologies, such as DeepSeek, in the US. The legislation would prohibit importing AI tech from China 180 days after enactment and impose heavy penalties – up to $100 million for entities and $1 million for individuals. Offenders would also lose eligibility for federal contracts and assistance for five years. The bill further restricts AI exports to China and bars US citizens from conducting AI research or collaborating with Chinese entities. DeepSeek is already seen as a security threat, with bans from the US Navy and NASA.
