General Motors is phasing out Android Auto and Apple CarPlay not only from its EVs but also from future gas-powered models. Instead, GM is developing its own in-car software platform powered by Google’s Gemini AI.
Starting in 2026, Gemini will serve as the built-in conversational assistant across Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC vehicles, offering natural voice interactions, real-time route updates and personalized maintenance suggestions. The system will be delivered via over-the-air updates to OnStar-equipped vehicles from 2015 onward.
GM says it aims to control its infotainment ecosystem while still exploring other AI partners like OpenAI and Anthropic. Drivers will retain control over their data, which GM promises won’t be sold or used for ads. The company’s goal: make the car itself the smartest device on the road.
