20th anniversary iPhone may have solid-state buttons

Apple is reportedly testing solid-state buttons for a special 20th anniversary iPhone, after earlier plans for the iPhone 15 Pro never materialized.

The upcoming model is expected to feature an all-glass design with a quad-curved display and buttons powered by a dedicated low-energy chip that can detect presses and provide haptic feedback even when the phone is turned off. Reports say the buttons have already passed tests in challenging conditions like wet hands, gloves and extreme temperatures.

The device may also include under-display Face ID and a selfie camera within a tandem OLED screen, improved Ceramic Shield protection and “under-display sound” instead of a traditional earpiece. A large 6,000mAh battery with reverse wireless charging is also rumored.

Overall, the anniversary iPhone could mark a major design shift toward a fully seamless, port- and button-minimal device.
