Sony Xperia 1 VIII unveiled with larger 48MP telephoto sensor

Sony has unveiled the new Sony Xperia 1 VIII, featuring a major camera upgrade and the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. The biggest change is a new 48MP telephoto camera with a much larger sensor, replacing Sony’s previous continuous optical zoom system with a fixed 70mm lens and high-resolution digital zoom.

The phone keeps several classic Xperia features, including a microSD card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack, two-stage shutter button and front-facing stereo speakers. Sony also added AI-powered camera assistance through Xperia Intelligence, helping users optimize camera settings automatically.

Other specs include a 6.5-inch 120Hz LTPO display, 5,000mAh battery with 30W wired charging and up to 16GB RAM with 1TB storage. The Xperia 1 VIII starts at €1,500/£1,400 and comes with free WH-1000XM6 headphones during the pre-order period, with shipping set for June.
