Spotify starts labeling AI artists

Spotify is introducing a new “AI Persona” label to help listeners identify artist profiles that may use AI-generated identities. The label will begin appearing in mid-September on artist profiles, search results and playlist track listings.

Artists can voluntarily identify themselves as AI Personas, but Spotify will also review profiles whose names or images appear to represent photorealistic AI-generated identities. Artists can appeal Spotify’s decisions, while users will eventually be able to report suspected AI Personas.

Music from AI Persona artists will be excluded from Spotify’s editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default, although it can still be recommended to users who follow those artists.

Spotify emphasizes that the label refers to an artist’s public identity, not necessarily how their music was created. The company says it will continue developing its AI policies while aiming to keep low-quality and spam content out of recommendations.
