Apple iPhone 17 early buyers spot scratchmarks on day one

Apple’s new iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are facing backlash just days after launch, with users and reviewers reporting that the phones scratch unusually easily — a controversy already dubbed “Scratchgate.”

Durability tests show the new anodized aluminum coating doesn’t hold up on the camera bump’s sharp edges, leaving them vulnerable to everyday damage from keys and coins. Bloomberg reports even Apple Store demo units worldwide developed scratches within hours, especially the deep blue models.

The design change was meant to improve heat dissipation and reduce weight, but early evidence suggests lower durability. Social media in China and beyond is filled with photos of scratched devices, while Apple has yet to respond to the growing criticism.
