Android will let ‘experienced users’ sideload unverified apps

Google is moving forward with mandatory developer verification for all Android app installs, including sideloading, but is creating an “advanced flow” for experienced users who want to install unverified apps. This new option will include strong warnings and protections to prevent scammers from coercing users into bypassing safety checks.

Google says verification is needed because scammers often pressure victims into sideloading malware, which can steal login codes and drain bank accounts. Requiring verified identities makes such attacks harder to scale. Google is also developing a special account type for students and hobbyists that supports limited app distribution without full verification.
