Tesla is reportedly testing Apple CarPlay internally and may finally add support after years of refusing phone mirroring. Sources say a public release could arrive in a few months, though Tesla often scraps features after long testing. The shift comes as Tesla faces a major sales slump following the 2025 backlash and is looking for ways to boost demand.
If launched, CarPlay would run in a window within Tesla’s interface rather than replacing it, and it would use the standard version — not Apple’s new immersive CarPlay Ultra. Tesla’s long resistance stemmed from its belief that its own software was superior, plus Elon Musk’s tense relationship with Apple.
CarPlay is one of the most requested car features: surveys show nearly half of buyers won’t purchase a car without CarPlay/Android Auto, and 85% prefer phone-based systems over built-in ones. Ironically, while some automakers like GM are trying to move away from CarPlay, Tesla is now considering the opposite.
