ChatGPT gaining group chat feature

OpenAI is piloting group chats for ChatGPT in select markets, marking a major shift in how chatbots can be used. The feature runs on the new GPT-5.1 model, and rate limits only apply when ChatGPT itself replies — allowing normal conversation between users without interruptions. ChatGPT will decide when to respond based on context, can be summoned by mentioning its name, and can react with emojis or use members’ profile photos to generate personalized images. The pilot is currently live in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan, with wider rollout planned after user feedback.
