Modern AI makes fake images harder than ever to spot, but Google is expanding its tools to help. SynthID, Google’s invisible watermark for AI-generated or edited media, can now be detected directly inside Google Gemini. Instead of uploading images to a separate web portal, users can quickly scan any picture in Gemini to see if it contains SynthID markers — even if only parts of the image were AI-altered.
However, there’s a major limitation: not all AI models use SynthID, so Gemini can only detect content watermarked by participating partners. Google hopes to broaden support, but for now, detection remains incomplete.
