Apple is poised to overtake Samsung as the world’s top smartphone maker this year and keep the lead through 2029, according to Counterpoint Research. iPhone shipments are expected to grow ~10% in 2025, while Samsung’s will rise only ~4.6%. Apple is projected to capture 19.4% of global shipments — its highest share since 2011.
The surge is driven by the upcoming iPhone 17 lineup, combining a new design, on-device AI chipset, and stronger cloud intelligence, boosted by favorable market conditions and a major upgrade cycle. Samsung, meanwhile, faces pressure as foldables no longer offer a clear advantage. Analysts say the Galaxy S26 will need major innovation, not small updates, if Samsung hopes to regain momentum.
