OpenAI is rolling out an age-prediction system for ChatGPT accounts, similar to YouTube’s approach. The system estimates whether a user is over or under 18 based on factors like account age, activity times, usage patterns and stated age. Accounts identified as under 18 will receive extra protections that limit access to certain content, with parental controls available. If the system can’t determine a user’s age, it will default to under 18, and wrongly restricted adults will need to verify their age via a selfie. The rollout comes amid increased scrutiny over online child safety and is expected to reach the EU soon.
