OpenAI is shutting down its standalone Sora app, despite its viral success and millions of downloads. The company hasn’t given a clear reason, but Sora’s video-generation features are expected to continue inside ChatGPT instead.
One major factor appears to be cost—running Sora reportedly required up to $15 million per day, making the service financially unsustainable. At the same time, Disney has pulled a planned $1 billion investment tied to the project.
The move suggests OpenAI is streamlining its products, possibly ahead of a future IPO, by focusing on integrating features into a single, more efficient platform rather than maintaining expensive standalone apps.
