Apple is reportedly making major progress on its camera-equipped AirPods, with the project now entering the design validation testing (DVT) stage. According to reports, Apple employees are already testing near-final prototypes internally ahead of potential mass production.
The built-in cameras are not meant for photos or video recording. Instead, they are designed to give Siri visual awareness, allowing users to ask questions about their surroundings, receive reminders based on what the cameras see or get enhanced navigation directions. The earbuds may also include an LED indicator to show when visual data is being uploaded to the cloud.
While Apple originally aimed to launch the new AirPods in early 2026, delays related to Siri’s AI development could still push the release further back if the company is not satisfied with the visual intelligence features.
