Amazon plans to acquire Apple’s 20% stake in Globalstar

Amazon is moving forward with its $11.6 billion acquisition of satellite firm Globalstar and has informed the FCC that it will also take over Apple’s 20% stake in the company as part of the deal.

The stake transfer is tied to Amazon’s broader plan to consolidate Globalstar through a subsidiary and expand its satellite-based connectivity services for smartphones and other devices.

Despite the ownership changes, Amazon says Globalstar will continue its existing work with Apple, including the satellite connectivity used for Emergency SOS features. The company also aims to build a wider global direct-to-device satellite network that serves multiple carriers and platforms.
