Google launches fake call detection in its Phone app

Google has announced a new fake call detection feature for the Phone by Google app, designed to protect users from increasingly sophisticated AI-powered impersonation scams. The feature verifies whether a call is genuinely coming from a trusted contact by securely exchanging encrypted confirmation signals between both users’ devices.

If a scammer spoofs a phone number or uses AI deepfake technology to mimic someone’s voice, the verification signal will be missing, triggering a warning on the recipient’s phone. The feature works through end-to-end encrypted RCS and is enabled by default.

Fake call detection will begin rolling out globally this month on Android 12 and newer devices, with Google Pixel phones receiving it first. Users of other Android devices can access the feature by installing the Phone by Google app and setting it as their default dialer.
