The European Commission has fined AliExpress €550 million for violating the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) by failing to effectively prevent the sale of illegal, unsafe, and counterfeit products on its platform.
According to the Commission, AliExpress’ detection and moderation systems were ineffective, allowing many illegal products to remain online for weeks. The company also failed to properly enforce penalties against offending sellers and did not adequately assess how its recommendation and advertising systems contributed to the spread of illegal products. AliExpress must submit a corrective action plan by October 20.
