FBI: cyber fraud cost Americans $21B last year

A new report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation reveals that cybercrime cost Americans nearly $21 billion in 2025, driven largely by investment scams and cryptocurrency fraud.

For the first time, the report highlights AI-powered scams, including voice cloning and deepfakes, which caused around $893 million in losses. Overall complaints exceeded 1 million, with phishing, extortion, and investment fraud among the most common.

The FBI warns that scammers often create urgency to trick victims and advises people to pause, verify requests through trusted channels and avoid acting quickly when money or sensitive information is involved.
