Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra has gone through a durability test and teardown, revealing both impressive strengths and some familiar weaknesses of foldable phones.
The outer display, protected by Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3, scratches at level 6 on the Mohs scale, while the inner folding screen remains vulnerable to scratches at level 2. An open flame causes permanent damage, although dust and debris do not immediately kill the folding display.
Most impressively, the Fold8 Ultra survives the first bend test without damage. However, a second bend causes the inner folding display to break, with the repair reportedly costing around $639.
The teardown also reveals four hinge components that are similar in design to those used in the Galaxy Z Fold8.
