HMD brings satellite connectivity to all smartphones

The HMD OffGrid, announced at CES 2025, adds satellite connectivity to any phone, enabling messaging, GPS and emergency SOS services without relying on terrestrial networks. Compact and lightweight (93.88 x 60.16 x 12mm, 60g), it connects wirelessly to your phone and works for up to three days on a single charge. It’s ideal for adventurers like hikers and boaters.

Priced at $199, the OffGrid requires a subscription:

  • Unlimited Plan: $14.99/month or $139.99/year for unlimited messages and SOS, with optional live tracking for $4.99/month.
  • Freedom Plan: $79.99/year for up to 350 messages, with the same live tracking option.

Competing options, like Garmin’s inReach Mini 2, offer navigation but at a higher cost. The OffGrid launches this month in the U.S., Europe, Australia and New Zealand, with more regions to follow in 2025.
