Astronauts made earth-selfies with iPhone 17 Pro Max

Astronauts on Artemis II mission have captured images of Earth using the iPhone 17 Pro Max – the first time a smartphone has photographed our planet from deep space. The device was approved for extended use in orbit and is carried by each crew member for personal use.

Photos taken on April 2 with the front camera were later edited in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic. While other smartphones, like Samsung’s Galaxy S24, have reached near space via balloon tests, none have been used by astronauts on a deep-space mission like this.

The mission also uses professional cameras such as the Nikon D5, Nikon Z 9 and GoPro HERO4 Black. Artemis II is NASA’s first crewed Moon mission since 1972 and is expected to set a record for the farthest human travel from Earth – making the iPhone the most distant-traveling smartphone ever used.
