XR headwear shipments plunge as glasses gain ground

Global XR headwear shipments fell 38.7% year-on-year to 1.9 million units in the first half of 2026, according to Omdia. The decline was driven by a sharp drop in traditional XR headset sales, while XR glasses continued to gain popularity.

XR glasses accounted for 25.8% of shipments, up from 10.2% a year earlier. RayNeo, VITURE and XREAL dominated the tethered display glasses segment, while Meta remained the overall market leader with a 48.2% share, despite a significant decline from 71.3%.

Omdia says the future of XR could depend on lighter glasses that integrate AI and spatial features into everyday activities, rather than bulky headsets designed for immersive virtual environments.
