Google has acquired parts of HTC’s Vive engineering team for $250 million to boost its Android XR platform for headsets and smart glasses. This follows its 2017 purchase of most of HTC’s smartphone business. The deal includes a non-exclusive license to HTC’s XR intellectual property.
Google aims to accelerate Android XR’s development, which supports features like Gemini assistant, Google apps and virtual screens. Samsung’s Project Moohan headset will be the first to run Android XR. However, success isn’t guaranteed, as seen with Google’s discontinued Stadia platform.
