Future iPhone assembly equipment could cost Apple billions of dollars

Apple is reportedly lobbying India to change its tax laws as it faces potential billions in taxes over iPhone production equipment.

While 25% of iPhones are now made in India, Apple’s usual model — owning the costly assembly machines itself — could trigger a “business connection” under Indian tax law, making its global iPhone profits taxable in India.

The company argues this rule could hinder further local expansion, even as it works with Foxconn and Tata to scale up production.
